BA Geography with Social Data Science

hgqm.jpg

The BA Geography with Social Data Science is an interdisciplinary Programme with modules taught by experts from the Department of Geography in collaboration with experts in Political Science, Social Science and Epidemiology.

It provides some of the most extensive training in quantitative methods to undergraduates anywhere in the UK. You will graduate with an understanding of social statistics as well as the methods required for the mapping and analysis of geographic data. Such tools and techniques are essential for answering important social, political and economic policy questions from a geographical perspective.

Students enrolled on this stream undertake many of the same modules as those on BA Geography. However, they also benefit from four core research methods modules taught across four world-leading departments to deliver the high-level technical and research skills that the programme specialises in.

In the first year, you will learn the key principles of social inquiry and be introduced to quantitative research methods. In the second year more advanced data analysis techniques will be taught as well as approaches to geographic research in preparation for the third year dissertation project.

You will also benefit in modules in geocomputation and spatial data science as well as a number of optional modules delivered from within and outside the department.

Finally, in the third year, you will devote time to a substantive dissertation project, supported by modules in quantitative policy analysis, population geography, economic geography and a choice of optional modules.

We are passionate about doing great geography research at UCL and we want to give you the chance to do your own whilst you are here. Read more about our dissertation projects, and some of the award-winning work our students have produced.

Applications for Undergraduate Programmes at UCL should be made through UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applicants currently at school or college will be provided with advice on the process; however, applicants who have left school or who are based outside the United Kingdom may obtain information directly from UCAS.

Please note you cannot apply directly to the BA Geography with Social Data Science via UCAS.

It is possible to transfer to the BA Geography with Social Data Science pathway from either the Geography BA or Geography BSc if you have the right grades including A level Maths.

Please ensure you’ve read the guidelines and entry requirements for the Programme you wish to apply for before submitting your application. You can return to the Undergraduate Programmes page, if you wish to revisit the Programme overview and entry requirements.

The demand for Big Data

Dr James Cheshire explains how big data draws connections between climate change and our day to lives, and how the data we collect can be used to inform future policies.
