Achieving sustainable and inclusive mobility is a major policy challenge facing transport authorities throughout the UK. Vulnerable groups, such as many older residents, experience cumulative social disadvantage when lack of affordable transport options restricts access to employment and local services (Lucas 2012; SEU 2003). As numerous studies show, limited opportunity to travel can have direct implications for health and well-being, notably when this results in lack of physical activity, psychological distress (arising from unsatisfied social and physical needs) and inadequate access to appropriate health care and medical treatment (e.g. Boniface et al 2015; Mackett and Thoreau 2015; Ziegler and Schwanen 2011).

This research will use data from electronic Travel Smart Cards and GPS-tracked vehicle movements, along with administrative, consumer and survey data, to gain insights into the mobility patterns and behaviours of the older population and the relationship between transport access and social exclusion. This research is being conducted in collaboration with the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) at UCL, which allows for access to a large transport dataset from a regional transport provider.
