David Lowenthal delivers Forbes Prize Lecture

In May, Professor David Lowenthal was awarded the 2010 biennial Forbes Prize for “conspicuous service in the field of conservation” by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, the first geographer to receive this honour (See News, May 2010),

On 20th September, he delivered the Forbes Prize Lecture at the Institute’s 23rd Congress in Istanbul. His title was, Omens from the Mediterranean: Conservation Nostrums in Mare Nostrum. In this, he linked the conservation of art and history to the care of the wider natural environment, and stressed the needs for long term stewardship of both.

The next day, David also participated in the plenary Round Table on historic urban regeneration, Between home and history, which discussed the interface between preservation and the development of living historic places.
