Alan Ingram presents research in Oslo and London

Art and Music with the Real

Dr Alan Ingram has recently presented his research on art and geopolitics at seminars at the Norwegian Academy of Music (as part of Ultima: Oslo Contemporary Music Festival) and City University, London.

The seminars form part of the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme project, Music with the Real, led by performer and researcher Håkon Stene. The project aims, 'to develop compositional and performance-related practices through cross-media works, integrating audio-visual samples', in dialogue with wider developments in contemporary art practice and theory.

Academic presentations and discussion were combined with workshops, performances and talks by composers, including Johannes Kreidler, Joanna Bailie and Matthew Shlomowitz. The seminars considered the practices of composers actively engaged in letting the outside world into their music and also explored how artists in other disciplines engage with 'the real'.

Alan presented material drawing from his research and curatorial work on artistic responses to geopolitical events, particularly regarding questions of aesthetics and politics in relation to the 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.
