Visual and literary Artists in Residence

Two Leverhulme awards in UCL Geography

Visual and literary Artists in Residence

Dr Andrew Harris and Dr Tariq Jazeel have each received Leverhulme Artist in Residence funding to collaborate with artists, both of whom will be present in UCL Geography during 2015.

The artist Tom Wolseley will be working with Andrew on a project entitled Shardology: New Visions of Vertical London, about London’s and Western Europe’s tallest building.

Tom will be conducting interviews with staff and students at UCL about the Shard, which he will use to facilitate making a narrative film and create a project website.

Tom would like to encourage anyone interested in the project to contact him at His previous projects can be seen at:, and on Vimeo:

Tariq will be working with the creative writer, Amita Murray. Her work focuses on migration, mobility, memory, and extended belongings between Britain and South Asia.

Amita’s short stories have been published in The Front View, Writing Disorder, Brand, Inkspill and other literary magazines, and she is the author of two novels, The Pre-Raphaelite Seamstress and Confessions of a Reluctant Embalmer. During her residency she will be working on a novel that links Bloomsbury’s educational institutions to the last days of colonialism in India.

The residency will more broadly stimulate explorations of the potential of creative writing to analytically engage place, memory and belonging in social sciences and humanities research.

Amita is currently offering a writing workshop for staff and PhD students, whose work can be seen on the blog:

She will also be running writing workshops for the Urban Lab and Stadtkolloquium during her residency. You can find her on twitter at @AmitaMurray
