Julian Thompson leads new NERC project

Indian Environmental Flows

Dr Julian Thompson is leading a new NERC funded project, Building joint India-UK capacity, capability, research and innovation in the environment.

With his long-term collaborators at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the project will scope approaches to improving water-related science in India, with a focus on environmental flows. This will involve the development of distributed hydrological models of the River Ganges capable of providing river flow projections under a range of scenarios.

Building on research that has focussed on another major Asian river, the Mekong, the model projections will be compared to those from a large-scale gridded hydrological model, and used to inform environmental flow assessment methodologies.

The project will also undertake a baseline assessment of microbial communities in water and soils along the Ganges, using metagenomic sequencing, and review the potential of including sediment within environmental flow assessments.
