Ann Varley to convene UCL Gender Studies programme

Professor Ann Varley is the new convenor of UCL Gender Studies, which offers Masters and PhD programmes as well as bringing together UCL researchers working in this field.

Gender Studies has been taught at UCL for over a decade as a unique adventure in cross-faculty collaboration. The programme is part of the Centre for Multidisciplinary and Intercultural Inquiry, based in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and is home to an expanding range of interdisciplinary programmes.

Later this month, for example, Ina Goel, from Delhi, will be coming to UCL to start postgraduate research in UCL Gender Studies on India’s transgender and intersex (hijra ) community. She will be supported by a prestigious Inlaks Foundation scholarship, and jointly supervised by Ann and Dr Richard Mole (SSEES)..

Ann says: ‘It’s an exciting time to be teaching Gender Studies. The resurgence of feminism and growing interest in the interface between sexuality and gender studies means we have a vibrant group of students, making teaching all the more fun.  As the Institute of Education, with its own expertise in gender studies, becomes part of UCL, we have a great opportunity to expand still further the wealth of disciplinary perspectives from which our students can benefit’.

‘I’m particularly pleased to be the first convenor from the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences – more evidence of UCL’s commitment to inter-faculty collaboration’.
