Industrial Heritage and Urban Regeneration
Robin Kim’s New Book
Dr Robin Kim’s new book, Industrial Heritage and Urban Regeneration (Dolbegae Publishing Press), has been published in Korea. Over the past couple of years he has undertaken several research projects on how derelict industrial estates and buildings might be re-created by partial renovation. The book is an outcome of this work. In Europe, old railway stations, power stations, factories and warehouses, constructed during and after the Industrial Revolution, and thus some 200 years old, are generally referred to as ‘industrial heritage’. Many successful examples have been revitalised by applying innovative ideas and concepts through a historic combination between old and new.
This book deals with 14 cases located in 13 European cities, including London, Paris and Madrid. It particularly explores the history and process affecting the rebirth of derelict industrial estates and buildings, emphasising the approach as part of urban regeneration. It also argues that the reuse of abandoned industrial estates and buildings is an effective way of materialising environmental, economic and social sustainability. The book will be available in an English translation.
