Death of Hugh Prince

67 years at UCL

Death of Hugh Prince

Dr Hugh Prince passed away at home on 20 February 2013, aged 85, following a brief illness. Hugh first entered UCL Geography as an undergraduate in October 1945, graduating in 1951 after an interruption for National Service.  His first academic post was as an Assistant Lecturer, appointed by Professor H.C Darby, and he remained employed at UCL until he retired, as a Reader, in 1992. He nevertheless continued to work and contribute to weekly departmental seminars until early this month.

This active retirement led to the submission of a 1996 PhD thesis, published in 1997 by Chicago University Press as Wetlands in the United States Midwest: A Historical Geography of Changing Attitudes. His studies of Hertfordshire parks, which had also begun over fifty years earlier, were published in 2008 as Parks in Hertfordshire since 1500.

Hugh has been an integral part of UCL Geography throughout its modern history - a scholar and a lovely man. He will be truly missed.
