UCL Youth Geographies Research Group Workshop

"Youth In Motion"

The UCL Youth Geographies Research Group (YGRG) recently convened a workshop at UCL for social scientists conducting research on and with youth. Entitled Youth In Motion: Spatializing Youth Movement(s) in the Social Sciences, the workshop attracted an international audience with participants from institutions in France, Finland, Italy, Canada and Australia, as well as from around the UK.

The workshop opened with a panel discussion based on short presentations from guest speakers Dr Robert Vanderbeck (Leeds), Dr Nicola Ansell (Brunel) and Dr Peter Hopkins (Newcastle), with Dr Claire Dwyer (Geography, UCL) acting as discussant.

Adopting a very different format from standard conference arrangements during the remainder of the workshop, participants were encouraged to give short position papers outlining some of the conceptual or empirical questions that define their current work.  Discussions were then grouped around the broad themes presented.

The final session aimed to map some of the key concerns emerging from social science with youth, and contribute to setting an agenda for future research.

Further information about the workshop can be found at youthinmotion.blogspot.com

The UCL YGRG was formed in 2010 by Caitlin O'Neill Gutierrez, James Esson, Rebecca Collins and Femi Adekunle.
