Richard Dennis hits the headlines

Dr Richard Dennis's paper to the Canadian Association of Geographers Conference in Ottawa in May was featured in Canada's best-selling newspaper, The Toronto Star, on Tuesday 9 June, under the headline 'Freedom for women came with apartments'.

Richard was contributing to a session on 'Historical Geographies of Toronto'. His paper, 'Home Suite Home?: Women and Apartment Living in Early Twentieth Century Toronto', draws on an ESRC project, undertaken with Ceinwen Giles, based on Toronto apartment housing records, supplemented by Richard's recent excursions into literary and newspaper archives.

The illustration shows the Midmaples Apartments, erected in 1912, featured in a 1914 publicity brochure. Midmaples was marketed as a 'ladies' residence' for teachers, nurses and business women.
