UCL Personal and Professional Development

In Portico, you will also have the opportunity to manage a description of your ‘Key Skills;’ extra-curricular skills which will increase your employability at the end of your degree.

The system is designed to guide students in developing the skills they need to support the transition process from school to university, to progress their academic studies at UCL and to enhance their future career planning. It enables students to profile their skills, identify skill development needs and to plan and record their skills development. It will enable personal tutors to have access to information useful in the writing of references.

The PPD System is accessible via PORTICO and is supported by a set of pages on the UCL website http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ppd.

To access your PPD Record use the ‘PPD’ tab on your Portico Homepage. It is your responsibility to set termly skills development targets and to update your skills record, however, you can get advice about planning your skills development from your Tutors. You must take charge of your skills development, but your tutor will have online access to your skill record on Portico to see how you are progressing. Making the effort to think about skills and to undertake some of the training available is an excellent way to maximize the opportunities for learning at UCL and is also vital to marketing yourself to employers in the future. Feedback from employers suggests that in addition to academic skills those skills associated with volunteering, sports and university societies are highly valued in graduate recruitment. Don’t assume that PPD Skills are only related to your academic work.
