Thesis title (working):

Leaf and Wood Separation from Terrestrial LiDAR Data

Supervisor: Dr. Mathias Disney, Reader in Remote Sensing in the Department of Geography, UCL.

Co-supervisor: Dr. Philip Lewis, Professor of Physical Geography, Department of Geography, UCL.

My current project is a part of a larger group that focus on how to improve the ability to reconstruct forest structure from LiDAR, as one of the major limitations is the difficulty of separating leaf and woody material in the LiDAR data.

This project seeks to develop new algorithms to achieve this separation, through by exploiting the information content of the LiDAR data combined with machine learning algorithms. For that, it will make use of existing data, collected by the UCL group in the UK, with leaf-on and leaf-off measurements, to develop and test new separation algorithms. These data would be supplemented by measurements made in the tropics, particularly at sites where the research group have access to girdling experiments, where trees are deliberately killed to monitor the dying process. These experiments also provide the opportunity to scan with leaves on and off, before the trees die.

The expected outcome of this project is a set of methods and tools (in the form of coded scripts and proposed methodology) to process and perform the separation of wood and leaf materials from LiDAR data, along with benchmarking tools to evaluate the performance of the separation.

The researcher is funded by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - Brazil) as part of the Science without Borders program.
