I'm your local friendly sysadmin.

I joined the Department in February 2014. I came to UCL itself over seven years ago that, having joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology before it was made part of the Division of Biosciences. While the research and teaching two doors down the road (in the Darwin and Anatomy buildings) do differ, many of the computer issues have strong similarities, and I'm enjoying these as well as the many differences.

Prior to UCL I'd spent time as (basically) a system administrator in Imperial and King's, and before that I worked in the private sector.

My main interests are in using open source software to make systems work effectively and cheaply. I'm best with Linux, but I've taken to deploying OpenBSD for secure servers, and I have some background with Solaris and (heaven help me!) IRIX. I'm more than happy to use Windows and Macs, but not as a server platform.

I'm currently working on developing the use of Linux Containers with Distributed Replicated Block Devices and some form of High Availability as a way of getting all the Geography infrastructure onto one stable (and resilient!) platform. At the same time I'm trying to tie together the different storage systems. I'm trying not to think about NIS+, but it's there, hovering...

Cool software I'm looking at:

  • Puppet
  • Linux Containers (LXC) and Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM)
  • Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRBD)
  • RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
