European Illegal migration

John Salt Co-chairs Annual Conference of Migration Statistics User Forum

European Illegal migration

As Chair of the Royal Statistical Society affiliated Migration Statistics User Forum, Professor John Salt co-chaired its fourth annual conference at the Home Office on 15th September. It was attended by about 80 researchers, officials, and local government and NGO representatives.

There were presentations by the Office for National Statistics and the Home Office on the latest developments in the production of statistics, the local government use of migration data, migration in Scotland, and forecasting migration.

A timely presentation by a representative of Frontex, the “European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders ... of the European Union”, set up in 2004, presented the latest data on illegal migration in southern and Eastern Europe and the current ‘migration crisis’.

This was followed by a discussion of the new UK government’s migration policy, led by the Head of Migration Policy at the Home Office.

The detailed presentations will be available on the MSUF website: http://www.statslife.org.uk/events/eventdetail/453/-/-
