More funding for Russell Hitchings

Towards sustainable energy use?

Dr Russell Hitchings has been awarded two grants, collectively amounting to around £400,000, to extend his work with various colleagues on how different social groups deal with buildings, and how they might be encouraged towards more sustainable ways of doing so.

The first grant, from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), is to support research into how people in desert Qatar adapt to living with air-conditioning. The research will be in collaboration with Dr Tim Winter at Deakin University, Dr Donald McNeill, University of Western Sydney, and Dr Jiat Hwee Chang at the National University of Singapore.

The second project is with colleagues in the UCL Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, questioning the assumptions architects make about what clients want when undertaking ‘minor works’ in their homes, and its significance for energy efficiency enhancement. This work is funded by the UCL Sustainable Cities Grand Challenge and will be with Dr Aeli Robert and Dr Niamh Murtagh as part of the development of the social science of construction at UCL.
