Alex Singleton’s new book sets out a framework for widening participation

Access to higher education

Educational Opportunity: The Geography of Access to Higher Education is the title of Dr Alex Singleton’s new book, published by Ashgate, which summarises much of his educational research over the past five year.

Although recent years have seen the burgeoning Higher Education (HE) sector set an agenda of widening participation, few HE institutions have strategies for reaching the full range of potential students who would benefit from their subject and course offerings. They are often unsystematic in the ways they identify schools and colleges for outreach and widening participation initiatives, and sometimes uncoordinated in presenting their full institutional profile of courses.

Employing an innovative methodology, this book presents a systematic framework for widening participation and extending access in an era of variable fees. In particular, it illustrates how HE data and publicly available sources might enable institutions to move from piecemeal analysis of their intake to wider  strategic and geographically linked market area analysis for existing and envisaged subject and course offerings.
