John Salt on the effects of the recession

Migration and the Transformation of London

On October 5th, Professor John Salt gave a presentation at a Roundtable on Migration and the Transformation of London at the London School of Economics. His paper – Overall Trends in Stocks and Flows and the Role of Large Employers – placed London’s international migration patterns into the broader perspective of the effects of recession on the UK labour market.

The most recent trends in managed labour immigration highlight the significant role, for both the London and national economies, played by international staff movements within large companies. Recession in Europe, however, is leading international companies to rebalance mobility in their corporate global labour markets in favour of new and emerging economies and markets.
