Philip Lewis on lasers measurements of the earth’s environment

New technologies for remote sensing measurement

Professor Philip Lewis presented a paper on new technologies for the remote sensing of information on forest canopies at a September Challenge Workshop of the NERC Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI) on ‘Enabling Technologies for Lidar Missions’. The workshop brought together specialists from academia and industry to discuss the development of spaceborne lidar missions. There is great potential in laser technologies to improve our ability to characterise many components of the Earth system, including gas and particulate concentrations and profiles of the atmosphere and vegetation biomass and other properties.
