The City in Urban Poverty

Charlotte Lemanski co-organises international workshop

The City in Urban Poverty

On 10-11 November, Charlotte Lemanski, with Colin Marx (UCL Development Planning Unit), co-organised a two-day closed workshop on The City in Urban Poverty. It was funded by the UCL Grand Challenges Small Grant Scheme for Sustainable Cities.

The workshop brought together a range of invited international experts including researchers working on both urban geography and urban poverty in the global South, as well as policy experts from the UK Department for International Development (DfID). They explored the ways in which a critical reflection on urban 'spatiality' would benefit urban poverty debates and practices. The workshop  provided an opportunity to debate new ideas and approaches to urban poverty, as well as an environment for constructive feedback on each paper.

Colin and Charlotte are currently preparing a proposal for an edited book as an outcome of the workshop.

The UCL Grand Challenges Small Grant Scheme funds projects that lead to, or support, cross-disciplinary collaboration under the broad headings of Global Health, Sustainable Cities, Intercultural Interaction and Human Wellbeing.
