Adapting to climate change

Martin Kernan at UNEP Brazil Conference

Adapting to climate change

On 12-16 May, Dr Martin Kernan attended the Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference, in Fortaleza Ceará, Brazil.

The conference was co-hosted by the Earth System Science Center of the National Institute for Space Studies (CCST-INPE) (Brazil), and UNEP's Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA). It explored ways forward in a world where climate change impacts are increasingly observable and adaptation actions increasingly necessary.

Martin presented a case study from the REFRESH project concerned with adaptive strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. The study, from the Thames catchment, used an integrated catchment model to predict vulnerability to future change and  assess the cost effectiveness of a range of mitigation and adaptation strategies designed to achieve compliance with the Water Framework Directive.
