DAAD Research Grant for Sam Merrill

Moving to Berlin Again!

Sam Merrill is among the 36 successful candidates chosen from 167 UK applicants to receive a 10-month research grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service) for the academic year 2013/14.

The award will fund a prolonged stay in Berlin following Sam’s UCL Graduate School Research Scholarship in October 2013, and will last until July 2014. He will be hosted by TU-Berlin’s Centre of Metropolitan Studies and Zentrum Technik und Gesellschaft (Centre for Technology and Society) under the supervision of Prof. Dr Dorothee Brantz and Dr Hans-Luidger Dienel.

The grant will allow Sam to undertake the final research for his PhD project investigating the production of social memory in the London Underground and Berlin U- and S-Bahn. It will also give him the opportunity to prepare publications, including a monograph proposal in accordance with German academic conventions that PhD research should be published within two years of completion.

During the grant period Sam will return to UCL regularly and participate in supervision meetings via Skype.
