Ann Varley speaks at Beirut conference

City Debates: Of Property in Planning

Professor Ann Varley was the guest of the American University of Beirut and the British Council on 7/8 March at the 2014 City Debates conference: ‘Of Property in Planning: Historical Transformations and Contemporary Practices.

City Debates is an annual conference organised by the Masters programmes in Urban Planning and Policy and in Urban Design of the AUB Department of Architecture and Design. Other geographers to speak in the series have included Derek Gregory and Nick Blomley.

Ann’s presentation, Normalising informal settlements? Titling and the construction of everyday properties, questioned the recent convergence of theoretical and policy debates about property formalisation in informal settlements. She argued that the critics of titling often overlook the views and wishes of residents, and questioned the inevitability of gentrification following titling.

This was Ann’s second visit to Lebanon. Ten years ago she had been invited to lecture at the same AUB department and had visited Palestinian refugee camps and informal settlements in Beirut, as well as the historical centre of Damascus in Syria.

The conference presentations can be seen on youtube: Ann’s presentation is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtmwas-Aucs.
