House of Lords launch of report to celebrate International Women’s Day

Ageing and women

Professor Ann Varley was a guest of Baroness Sally Greengross and the International Longevity Centre-UK at tea held at the House of Lords to launch the ILC’s compendium of short essays addressing the question ‘Has the Sisterhood forgotten older women?’. The report was published on International Women’s Day, 8th March.

Ann contributed an essay to the collection on ‘Feminism’s pale shadows: older women, gender and development’. She argues that, despite third-wave feminism’s focus on difference, it has privileged young women’s issues and neglected older women. This bias is evident, in work on gender and development, in a persistent fixation on lone-mother households – interpreted as younger women with dependent children – and ignored older women’s many contributions to household welfare.
