Peter Jones launches international study at Bergen Workshop

UNEP Report published on governance of Marine Protected Areas

A UNEP report on different approaches to governing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) was launched by Dr Peter Jones in a keynote address at the International Workshop, Exploring the Role of MPAs in Reconciling Fisheries Management with Conservation, held at the  Institute of Marine Research, Bergen Norway on 29 March.

Peter led the research, involving 20 MPA case studies from around the world, including three UK MPAs, analysing them by employing a new governance analysis framework to ‘deconstruct’ the complexities of MPA governance, based on 40 incentives in five categories.

The report, now available at http://www.mpag.info, describes the findings of this work.

The Report is intended to provide a foundation for further discussion and learning through the application of the governance analysis framework in different contexts, giving MPA managers a preliminary resource for assessing how combining different incentives might support the governance of their MPA.
