Understanding Transitions Through Methodological Innovations

UCL PhD students Adefemi Adekunle and Rebecca Collins recently convened a day workshop for fellow PhD students and early career researchers under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society's Geographies of Children, Youth & Families Research Group.  [http://www.gcyf.org.uk/]

The workshop, entitled Understanding Transitions Through Methodological Innovations brought together emerging and established researchers from around the UK to consider some of the conceptual and methodological challenges of conducting geographical research with children, youth and families.

Hosted by Dr Peter Kraftl at the University of Leicester, the workshop featured a mix of paper sessions and practical discussions addressing specific ethical and theoretical concerns, and closed with a panel discussion with guest speakers from the policy arena.

The keynote speaker, Dr Anoop Nayak (Newcastle University), addressed methodological and conceptual issues in using photographs for ethnographic work with white working-class young men.

Funding for the event was provided by the Royal Geographical Society's Geographies of Children, Youth & Families Research Group (GCYFRG) and the Department of Geography at the University of Leicester.

The organisers also thank members of the GCYFRG committee who participated in the event.
