Militant research with Occupy London

Area Prize goes to Sam Halvorsen

Dr Sam Halvorsen, who gained his PhD in UCLGeography in 2014 and is now a lecturer at Sheffield University, has been awarded the 2015 Area Prize for New Research in Geography.

Sam’s paper, ‘Militant research against-and-beyond itself: critical perspectives from the university and Occupy London’ (Area 47 466–472), is based on his PhD work at UCL on territorial practices and territoriality in the Occupy London movement. The citation reads:

‘This accomplished and well-argued paper advances geographical research on militant research and activism. It interrogates different sites for doing militant research located both within, and beyond, the confines of the neoliberal university. Drawing upon research with Occupy London, it explores the challenges of institutionalising militant research, advocating for open and relational understandings.
