The Life and Work of Carl Sauer

David Lowenthal co-edits authoritative biography

The Life and Work of Carl Sauer

Professors David Lowenthal, with William Denevan and the late Michael Williams, is the co-author of To Pass on a Good Earth: The Life and Work of Carl O. Sauer, published in May by the University of Virginia Press.

Sauer was the pre-eminent American geographer of the 20th century and, in the decades before and after World War II, his Berkeley-school historical approach to cultural geography was, in many ways, congruent with H. C. Darby's to historical geography at UCL.

In March, David also celebrated the 150th anniversary of George Perkins Marsh's Man and Nature: Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action at the American Society for Environmental History annual meeting in San Francisco.

He is also organizing two sessions on Marsh’s Man and Nature and its legacy, at the forthcoming Second World Congress of Environmental History, to be held at the University of Minho, Guimaraes, Portugal, in July 2014.
