Ann Varley and Charlotte Lemanski at Spanish workshop

Law, urban space and social justice

Professor Ann Varley and Dr Charlotte Lemanski contributed to a workshop on Law, urban space and social justice in northern Spain on 5-6 June.

The meeting was the first International Research Group on Law and Urban Space event held since its re-launch, at the Oñati Institute for the Sociology of Law.

Geographers, lawyers and planners from Bulgaria, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa and the UK came together to discuss issues related to planning rights, land use and urban governance in cities throughout the world.

Ann’s paper, with her Mexican colleague Clara Salazar, was on: The limitations of the local: the changing landscape of urban property rights formalization in Mexico.

Charlotte spoke on, Participatory urban governance: Spatial inequality and temporal ignorance in South Africa.
