David Lowenthal presents keynote address as US Conference

George Perkins Marsh in his time and ours

On May 4th Professor David Lowenthal gave the keynote address, Marsh in his time and ours, at an international conference, George Perkins Marsh: An American for All Seasons, organised by the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken New Jersey.

The conference celebrated the achievements and insights of Marsh (1801-1882), environmentalist, diplomat, philosopher, and scholar. Contributors spoke about Marsh’s many achievements as well as the impact of his work, which has continued to reverberate through the environmental movement since the late nineteenth century, and enjoyed a recent resurgence in scholarship through the growth of interdisciplinary thinking and ecocriticism.

A selection of the papers presented will be published in a volume of conference proceedings.
