Death of Edith Fawcett

Benefactor to UCL Geography

Death of Edith Fawcett

Edith Fawcett, who instigated the UCL Geography Fawcett Fellowship scheme for mid career teachers, has died.

Miss Fawcett was the daughter of Professor CB Fawcett, head of the department from 1928 to 1949. In 1984, she made a generous endowment to the department to support the Fellowships, offering mid-career geography teachers a unique opportunity for personal professional development by studying at UCL for an academic term.

Since then almost 50 Fawcett Fellows have benefited from the scheme, usually two each year.

Edith's generosity means that the Fellowships will continue, although unfortunately without her enthusiastic and always astute presence.
