Pushpa Arabindoo at Berlin Roundtables on the Urban Planet

Overcoming the formal-informal divide

Dr Pushpa Arabindoo was invited to a workshop on 'Urban Development in a Globalising World - Overcoming the Formal-Informal Divide', at a meeting of the Berlin Roundtables on the Urban Planet, held on 12-13 June.

This series is organised jointly by the Irmgard Coninx Foundation, the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) and the Humboldt-University Berlin, and seeks to foster a deepened understanding of human relations and living conditions inside megacities and (mega-) urban agglomerations. Pushpa’s paper, 'Bajji on the beach: Middle class (pre)conceptions of food practices in Chennai's New Beach', highlighted flaws in the the bourgeois discourse relating to informal food vendors, which emphasise notions of dirt and hygiene which can easily be challenged and contested.
