Early work of the “Father of GIS”

Roger Tomlinson PhD thesis now online

Professor Paul Longley writes:

Many GIScientists will be aware that the late Roger Tomlinson, the “Father of GIS”, completed his PhD in UCL Geography in the 1970s.

Following the establishment of the Roger Tomlinson Prize earlier this year, the gift of ESRI founder Jack Dangermond, we are delighted to report that a digital version of the thesis can now be found online at: http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1563584/.

(In the two days after becoming available on 12 July, there had already been 223 downloads, including 72 to the USA, 23 to the UK and 18 to Canada).

A short foreword is included, written by Roger's nominal PhD supervisor, now Emeritus Professor Peter Wood, who remains an active presence in UCL Geography..
