Carole awarded this year’s Faculty Medal

Another success for Geography finalist

Carole awarded this year’s Faculty Medal

Congratulations to final year undergraduate UCL Geographer Carole Roberts, who has been awarded the 2017 Social and Historical Sciences Faculty Medal, as the Faculty’s best undergraduate of the year.

As well as her examination performance, Carole completed an excellent fieldwork-based dissertation, supervised by Professor Viv Jones, using lake sediments from Easedale Tarn in the English Lake District to examine the environmental history of the site.

Showing an independent approach to the analyses, she put in long lab hours assessing the impact of recent pollution by counting and identifying diatoms and plant macrofossils from a lake bed core. She was able to show that the lake’s ecosystem has been affected by long-distance nitrogen pollution as well as acid rain.

Her field work on this and other lakes also contributed to the NERC Hydroscape project, and the results are likely to be published in a scientific journal.
