Polish migration to the UK

John Salt explains on “Daily Politics”

Polish migration to the UK

On June 25th, Professor John Salt  was interviewed on the BBC’s Daily Politics programme as part of a wider discussion on international migration.

He explained why so many Poles had come to the UK after 2004. This resulted from a combination of:

  • Demographic and economic circumstances in Poland,
  • Free labour movement upon accession of the country to the EU.
  • The UK’s decision to open up its labour market to the newcomers,
  • A large number of low skilled, entry level job vacancies in the UK,

This resulted in a ‘perfect storm’, favouring large scale in-movement during the following decade.
