Death of Bill Mead

Professor William R (Bill) Mead died on 20 July, nine days before his 99th birthday.

He came to UCL in 1949, and played a leading role in the Geography Department's subsequent success, as scholar of Scandinavia, Head of Department during 16 years of major expansion from 1966, and after 1982 as an active Emeritus, publishing his latest book, Pehr Kalm – his London diary, 1748, earlier this year.

Bill was a prominent figure in British Geography more generally and in Finnish and wider Scandinavian studies. He nevertheless lived, and remained active, in his native Buckinghamshire for all his life.
