Guernsey meeting on Arts, islands and Islomania

David Lowenthal addresses Small Island Cultures Conference

Professor David Lowenthal gave an address on "Island victims of islomania" at the 6th International Conference on Small Islands Cultures in Guernsey, Channel Islands, on June 25th. .

This year the Small Island Cultures Research Initiative collaborated with the Arts and Islands Conference in Guernsey, Channel Islands. The theme was Art, Islands and Islomania. Islomania, a term coined by Lawrence Durrell,  describes people who find islands irresistible as ‘a rare affliction of spirit’. Sufferers are filled ‘with an indescribable intoxication’ at the ‘mere knowledge that they are in a little world surrounded by sea’.

The conference provided an opportunity for artists and academics to examine developing ideas and initiatives on how the arts can affect and be instrumental in social change, looking in particular at small island cultures and environments.
