The Vertical City

Andrew Harris and Tom Wolseley at Lyon conference

The Vertical City

Dr Andrew Harris was a keynote presenter at the ‘La Ville Verticale’ international conference at Université Lyon 2 in late November, which explored recent vertical dimensions of urbanization.

Andrew presented work that drew on his ‘Vertical Urbanism’ project, on elevated transport structures in Mumbai, as well as a recent paper in Progress in Human Geography entitled ‘Vertical Urbanisms: Opening up Geographies of the Three-dimensional City’. He also used the opportunity to prepare a short mix of music on this theme.

Tom Wolseley, a Leverhulme Artist in Residence in UCL Geography, also participated, and spoke about his project with Andrew and Dr Martine Drozdz (Université Paris Sorbonne) on the Shard, London and Western Europe’s tallest building.

Tom presented an early version of an essay film he is currently making as part of his UCL residency. This examines the Shard from a range of perspectives; emotional, economic, social, architectural, cultural, international, political and geographical, as well as referencing the construction of the film itself.
