Tariq Jazeel’s new book

Sacred Modernity

Dr Tariq Jazeel’s 2013 book, Sacred Modernity: Nature, Environment and the Postcolonial Geographies of Sri Lankan Nationhood (Liverpool University Press), has now been co-published as a paperback in Sri Lanka by the Social Scientist’s Association, Colombo.

The book argues that everyday non-secular experiences of the natural world in Sri Lanka perpetuate ethno-religious narratives of identity. It explores the relationships between spaces of nature and environment, and the continuous aesthetic constitution of power and the political in which Sri Lankan Therevada Buddhism is centrally implicated.
