Charlotte Lemanski at Lyon Workshop

Informality: South-North dialogue

Dr Charlotte Lemanski was invited to participate in the 5th annual meeting of the Continental Research Network on Informality in Metropolitan Spaces (RECIM). The 16-17 January workshop, held in Lyon, was entitled Reflecting on the heuristic potential of informality: a South-North dialogue.

RECIM (Red continental de investigacion sobre la informalidad en las metropolis) is a network of researchers in Mexico, the United States, Canada, and more recently France and South Africa, working on various “informal” practices in urban settings.  Its primary orientation is that informality is an important structuring notion for critical reflection on social sciences.

Charlotte presented comparative work analysing the emergence of informality as a concept in South Africa and India.
