Charlotte Lemanski gains British Academy support for Cape Town research

Dr Charlotte Lemanski has secured a British Academy Small Research Grant (2009-2010) for a project entitled, 'Embedded in the city? Participation and urban governance for low-income households in Cape Town'.

The research will explore the political mobilisation and participation of poor households in Cape Town. Despite being embedded in 'the formal system', through state-subsidied homeownership with full service provision, this also blocks their ability to engage with the state in other ways. The  research will complement a mass of current literature focusing on the participation of those poor inherently outside the system. The grant will support a period of in-depth fieldwork in Cape Town, SouthAfrica later in 2009.
