Richard Dennis on 'The Urbanist'

The invention and reinvention of department stores in London

On January 28th., Professor Richard Dennis featured in a programme on the impact of department stores in London, Paris and Istanbul, broadcast by the online radio station Monocle.

Richard discussed how, in London, department stores evolved to exploit the rise of the middle classes and the display success of popular glass-clad exhibitions. Today, some seem to have reinvented themselves by going back to the late 18th and early 19th century retail era, when they began as bazaars for the display of other companies’ wares.
