Poor statistics bedevil migration policy

Professor John Salt featured on the BBC2 Daily Politics programme on Monday 3rd February talking about migration statistics.

Among the points he made were:

  1. With the possible exceptions of North Korea and Australia, no country has accurate data on its immigration and emigration flows
  2. A population register is the only way to get a significant improvement in UK data
  3. There is too much polarisation of views in discussions about UK migration.

A compromise approach is needed which distinguishes between various migration streams, such as labour, family, and student migration, and asylum  seekers, and the conditions under which they may need to be regulated. In contrast, current approaches regard migrants as a largely homogeneous mass.
