“Your own view” is People’s Choice in Graduate School competition

Jennifer Pate won the “People’s Choice” prize in the recent Graduate School Research Images as Art exhibition for her image, Your own view.

This was taken on a 5 week UCL-funded kayak expedition that she led to Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island, British Colombia, Canada in 2009. This involved kayaking in the Pacific Ocean, with members undertaking three different research projects for their undergraduate dissertations (one human geography, two physical geography).

The photo was taken at the northern-most aquatic point of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Sydney Inlet. Jennifer explained, “This was one of the most remote places I've yet been to in my life, with the forest lining the inlet being spectacular, relatively untouched, old growth - A fantastic place for reflection and perspective”. While they were there, the party was also lucky enough to observe four humpback whales and two black bears.

Jennifer graduated last year with a BA Geography, and is studying on UCL Geography’s  MSc Environment, Science and Society course this year.
