How do older people get through the winter?

Nuffield Foundation grant for Russell Hitchings

How do older people get through the winter?

Dr Russell Hitchings, with Dr Rosie Day who formerly studied in the department, has been awarded a Nuffield Foundation grant to study how different groups of older people in the UK negotiate the winter. They will use a novel mixture of qualitative methods to explore how different income groups manage their thermal comfort and why they adopt these strategies. The study will focus on the establishment of routine behaviours to stay warm, so that deeper insights can be developed into the context of these seasonal responses and the scope for useful public support.  Interviews will start this December.
