Conference: Under Control?

From etherised strawberries to temperance cordials

Conference: Under Control?

Dr James Kneale was one of the organisers of Under Control?, the Alcohol and Drugs History Society’s bi-annual international conference at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on 21-23rd June.

As well as four days of papers from ninety speakers – including UCL Geography’s Dr Alan Latham and Charlotte Jones – the meeting supported a fringe programme.

This began with a talk on the history of ether from Sam Bompas (UCL Geography 2004), of food artists Bompas & Parr.

Delegates tasted ‘etherized strawberries’ in champagne as well as an ether cocktail invented by the mystic, Aleister Crowley.

The fringe programme ended in more abstemious style with the recreation of a 1903 Band of Hope temperance evening conducted by Dr Annemarie McAllister (University of Central Lancashire, curator of ‘Demon Drink’). Attendees sang temperance songs, drank temperance cordials, and agreed to abstain from strong drink.
