Honouring John Birks

Special issue of The Holocene

Honouring John Birks

To mark Professor John Birks’ retirement from his position at the University of Bergen earlier this year, his colleagues and former students compiled the January 2015 special issue of The Holocene in his honour.

The volume, At the frontiers of palaeoecology: A special issue in honour of H John B Birks, was edited by Rick Battarbee (UCL), Kathy Willis (Oxford) and Anne Bjune (Bergen).

It was presented to John at a special two-day symposium in Bergen on 19-20 March, where, amongst many others, papers were presented by Hilary Birks, Rick Battarbee and Gavin Simpson (now at Regina, Canada). John himself gave the final paper.

The meeting was also attended by Roger Flower, Ewan Shilland and Anson Mackay, from the UCL Geography Environmental Change Research Centre (ECRC).

At the dinner Anson thanked John for his contributions to UCL over the years especially for teaching his internationally famous short course on "Numerical analysis of biological and environmental data" .
