Gentrification beyond its ‘Western Heartlands’

Andrew Harris invited to Beirut conference

Gentrification beyond its ‘Western Heartlands’

Dr Andrew Harris was the guest of the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the British Council in early March at the 2015 City Debates conference: Other Gentrifications: Urban Change Beyond the Core.

City Debates is an annual conference organised by the Masters programmes in Urban Planning and Policy and in Urban Design of the AUB Department of Architecture and Design. Started in 2002, City Debates brings together professionals, academics, and students from Beirut and beyond to explore issues of contemporary relevance to the urbanization of the region.

Andrew’s presentation, Postcolonialising the Historical Comparativism of Gentrification examined gentrification’s inherent historical frames of reference and their critical relevance in investigating urban contexts beyond gentrification's traditional Western 'heartlands'.
