European Space Agency funding for modelling of 3D vegetation simulation

Mat Disney and Philip Lewis to support development of open source toolkit

European Space Agency funding for modelling of 3D vegetation simulation

Dr. Mat Disney and Professor Philip Lewis have secured €70k funding from the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the 3D Vegetation Laboratory (3DVegLab) project. The 20 month project is led by the Remote Sensing Laboratory at the University of Zurich, and brings together experts in remote sensing and modelling to develop an open source toolkit for researchers to explore the reflectance properties of 3D vegetation canopies.

The toolkit will help researchers develop new methods for retrieving vegetation properties from forthcoming ESA Sentinel and Explorer satellite missions. Mat and Lewis will be providing core tools for simulating 3D vegetation scattering properties which they have developed and refined over a number of years.
