Modelling fire from Earth Observation

Mat Disney present new results at Kingston University

Modelling fire from Earth Observation

On 24th March Dr. Mathias Disney gave an invited seminar at the Centre for Earth and Environmental Science Research, Kingston University School of Geography, Geology and the Environment, on "3D modelling of vegetation for remote sensing of fire and carbon". He presented new model simulations at high spatial detail of the interactions of optical radiation with vegetation.

The technique allows us to understand what satellites see when the observed surface reflectance changes as a result, for example, of the impacts of fire. The image shows simulations of fire impacts on a 3D model of a savannah system, where the primary effect is the conversion of the grass layer to black char.
